After the success of La chambre d’Isabella (2004), Jan Lauwers took on a sizeable challenge: adapt a known, renowned and multi-prizewinning novel written by a friend. Stefan Hertmans’ novel was based on old notebooks that his grandfather Urbain Martien entrusted him with at his death. The notebooks contained his writings on different episodes of his life, a poverty-stricken childhood in the Ghent of the late nineteenth century, the atrocities of the first world war, his love for a woman who died too soon, as well as his reflections on his life as a painter. An outlet and a way of sublimating suffering.

Jan Lauwers takes hold of this epic and offers the key role, that of narrator, to the highly talented Viviane De Muynck. Composer Rombout Willems has written a score for piano, cello and violin which is choreographic and pictorial and evokes with poignancy the realism of the beginning of the century and the violence of war. All of this now a world that no longer exists.
