The Service Public Francophone Bruxellois awarded the label “spectacle d’utilité publique 2019” to the show Is There Life on Mars? This label has as goal to strengthen a policy of support, of education, of outreach and of reflection through theatrical works to benefit sectors of the population which do not usually participate in traditional cultural events.
Amélie, Sami, Albert and Jozef have a different way of experiencing the world, completely unknown to us. During 2 years, Héloise Meire met with many autistic people and their close ones, propelled by a desire to better understand their life, their daily experiences; their perceptions of a society of which they don’t always have the key.
Journey to the center of autism, the show manages to transcribe
the reality of these testimonials through a poetic and sensory approach which places the spectator squarely within the emotion of the original words.
Visual, choreographic and sonorous, Is There Life On Mars? addresses the complexity of a subject which has not often been addressed artistically. It demonstrates that there are as many forms of autism as there are autistic people and it avoids the clichés tied to the misunderstanding or the trivialization of the problems inherent in autism.
Simultaneously, it raises questions on the notion of normality and of one’s own relation to the world. A necessary meditation.
