Theatre – Performance

Cyril Teste, the master of ”film performance” – which exists at the crossroads of theatre, performance art and cinema – follows a precise creative charter to imagine an object built on a set of mirrors between the wings, the eye of the camera and the vision of the public. Continuing his trilogy on the family and the powerful mother-son bond in the wake of Festen and Hamlet, Cyril reexamines Chekhov’s great classic The Seagull in a French translation by the poet Olivier Cadiot, to perceive the ambiguous beauty of the cinematographic character, and of psychoanalysis. The original text is enriched with excerpts from Chekhov’s correspondence and one of his short stories, A Dreary Story.

In a workshop or film studio setting, Cyril Teste offers a sophisticated, hybrid scenic device, which poetically mixes live performance with sequence shots projected on video. By placing canvases to project the images, like fragments of a life through which the spectators can wander, the staging composes an unstructured, fragmented and current vision of The Seagull. Drama, love, jealousy, oedipal relationship. The performance seeks to track the emotion on the faces, an emotion of a unique, universal quality. From the depths, we see the space between the intimate and the off-screen, between reality and image, like caches, or extensions, bodies, desires. Because we are very close to life.
