The Free Will

Ukrainian Theatre People in War

Since February 24, 2022, the Ukrainian theatre people have been acting in four battlefields:

  • serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine defending the country from the Russian aggression;
  • volunteering for the cause: collecting and delivering humanitarian aid to internally displaced people (internal refugees) and people in hot zones, evacuating and providing shelter for them;
  • carrying out their professional activities (conducting rehearsals and shows);
  •  collaborating with European theatres while being temporarily relocated in Europe.

A series of interviews with renowned theatre people of Ukraine is aimed to cast light on the life of artists in a new, distorted reality of the war. The project will feature testimonies of Ukrainian theatre people on the current war that is raging in Ukraine, the new formats Ukrainian theatres are forced to work in, the current activities as well as new priorities of Ukrainian theatre companies, the primary mission of the theatre and the role of culture in wartime, the challenges, needs and demands the Ukrainian society is currently facing, the specific traits of the Ukrainian nation, the core values Ukrainians are fighting for.

ВОЛЯ / The Free Will: Ukrainian Theatre People in War is a Théâtre National Wallonie-Bruxelles project, conducted by Yulia Ostrohliad.
