Urban Dance Caravan

23.09.2023 · 18:00

Opening a season can involve an anchoring in a city, in a region, but it can also involve new affinities, alternative visions – and, above all, pleasure. Urban Dance Caravan grew out of a desire to invent new forms in common and circulations danced in Brussels (a city and region home to multiple cultures and languages), in Wallonia and far beyond. Where the dance that engages the body, welcoming what surrounds it and projecting itself into what it becomes, is both an expression of freedom and of living well.

Urban Dance Caravan is a new form of association that rekindles cultural and social dynamics. It was thought out and (co)constructed with Detours (the Brussels festival of urban dance and street art) and the Théâtre National Wallonie-Bruxelles. Urban Dance Caravan is a vast palette of urban dances that feel, experience and cross the city centre, from square to square, leading us to the heart of the Théâtre National.

Over the course of a Saturday afternoon, dancers from all over Belgium, gathered around the finalist dancers (Detours Cyphers), the Detours Battles of Wallonia (Namur, Liège), Casablanca in Morocco, Goma in Congo and Groupe Stéréo 48 from Palestine, perform on lightning stages, from Bourse to Place De Brouckère and on to Boulevard Jacqmain, leading the crowd to the main stage of the Théâtre National for the final battle of the Detours Cyphers.

What better way to open the season of the Théâtre National than by entering it from the street, dancing and celebrating positive creations. Thanks to radical hospitality, human, natural, creative and poetic links are forged between Brussels and Wallonia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, for greater understanding between cultures and the multi-way circulation of audiences and artists, capable of changing our modes of attention and perception. In its raw simplicity, Urban Dance Caravan shifts the edges of the city and those of the Théâtre National. It breathes life into the democratic community.

It is the theatre that fissures the asphalt of the city. It is the city that fissures the floor of the theatre.
