Piñata Cake
Gaël Santisteva
After Voie, Voix, Vois last season, Gaël Santisteva now turns to an exploration of play and of the astonishing: what happens when expectation is more thrilling than is the revelation itself? In a physical theatre, where the body breaks free of restrictions, Piñata Cake plays with materials and appearances, between achievement and transgression. Lamé drapes, veils and sparkling fabrics form curtains or traps, in turn hiding and revealing the performers, who form pyramids, burst into tirades of speech or song. The stage becomes an experimental landscape, inspired by the circus, where astonishment reigns. But never where it is expected.
It's fun, but not only that. Behind the light-heartedness, Piñata Cake questions our fascination with orchestrated mystery, the frenzied expectation of a revelation, which exhausts us as soon as it happens. As on social media, where the “reveals” arouse desire much more than the product unveiled. A feast of the absurd, driven forward by the pleasure of the unfamiliar illusion and the scoop.
