Planet [wanderer]
Damien Jalet
Kohei Nawa
A major figure in contemporary dance, Damien Jalet, from Brussels, moves between large-scale international collaborative projects and more personal undertakings. His works, often collaborations, bear witness to the power of dance to continually reinvent itself in dialogue with other disciplines, such as the plastic arts, music, cinema and fashion.
For this second panel of a diptych, begun with Vessel, he is extending his collaboration with the Japanese plastic artist Kohei Nawa.
On a sparkling, black sandy floor, offering a contemporary evocation of the style of the dry gardens of Kyoto, eight dancers move in waves, as if planted in a biotope in transition, like reeds bending in the wind of a strange, new world. Here everything is transformed: Planet [wanderer] brings together bodies which pass through changing hesitating states of fluidity and density, and blending together. Throughout this sensory odyssey, Tim Hecker's music weaves a fabric of sound, between electronic layers and tones of traditional gagaku instruments.
Praised around the world, Planet [wanderer] asserts itself as an experience of overwhelming visual power. A disturbing force, which holds these silhouettes in continuous imbalance, dependant on an unstable, poetic environment.
