Bâtir
Salim Djaferi
After Koulounisation, Salim Djaferi continues to write, blending individual stories and collective history, in Bâtir [Building]. His starting point: the huge complexes where he and his parents grew up, in Seine-Saint-Denis, and their striking resemblance to the cities built in French Algeria during the 1950s. From the suburbs to the theatre stage: where is our colonial heritage hiding, and how can it be revealed?
Along with his team, Salim Djaferi leads the enquiry among his relatives, the inhabitants of these districts, and the researchers with whom he has delved into the public archives. Collecting both personal stories and official documents, he is trying to flush out the persistent, sometimes invisible, expressions of this construction of the other.
