EXTRA LIFE
Gisèle Vienne
A car, stopped in the middle of nowhere. Inside are Clara and her brother Félix, separated for twenty years, and now together again after a night of celebration and dancing. Between them they share a fragmented past, a close relationship, torn apart by a drama. An intimate story now unrolls, in which science-fiction is just a lure to externalise something that one does not want to recognise. The hypnotic lights, the dimness, the laser beams, all transform the stage into a mysterious landscape, cut across with smoke and bursts of fireworks. As a third character arrives, this poignant story plays out again, marked by violence. As if to “unfold” the moment, and disorientate the audience, the narrative dissolves into a detailed deconstruction of time, in which the slow progress accentuates the perception of every movement.
Instead of offering a linear account, Gisèle Vienne constructs a sensitive, sensorial experience, in which sound, light and movement express the unsayable. With Extra Life, she is staging a choreography of vulnerability and resilience. By fragmenting temporality, she examines what remains after the trauma: the possibility of survival, of recovering one's past, rebuilding and finding oneself again.
